Cruiser Racing

Roa Island Boating Club has an active cruiser racing group who run a championship series of handicap races throughout the season (beginning of May through to the end of September).

Races usually take place most Sundays during the day (weather permitting) and on selected Friday evenings.

Races are open to both members and non members but only club members qualify for the many race or championship cups.

We currently use a PY handicap scheme (but also maintain a parallel NHC scheme alongside).

Starting this year (2023) we will also be allowing competitors to submit a YTC handicap – This will not be used for the Championship but we will be keeping a close eye on this system which is currently starting to gain traction following adoption by the RYA. If you would like to know more about YTC, you can find out more by clicking here

The YTC website can also be used to apply for a YTC Certificate (RIBC is registered as a Club on the system and you can connect your application to RIBC – Let us know if you need any help with this though!

We use HalSail to to plan and track these activities and you can find the latest scheduled events and results here (opens in a new tab)

Boats start the season with a PY agreed by the Race Committee at the beginning of the season (see starting numbers in HalSail here:)

Once a boat has achieved 4 valid performances (valid performances are ones where the adjusted performance is within 7% of other competitors in that race) its handicap is automatically adjusted by 50% of the difference between its starting handicap and its statistically achieved average performance. Details of how these of been adjusted will be published here throughout the year.

RIBC Regatta Weekend is being held this year on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August: Members and their guests are invited to come and join us for a weekend of activities on the water for all: Full details click here:
